Quest for Rest - Book of Ruth

Book of Ruth

Ruth is one of the three women the Bible lists in the lineage of Jesus Christ- foreigners all. Though she came to faith in Yahweh due to famine and fatality, during a time of grave apostasy against God, hers is the story of faithfulness in the midst of heresy, of blind trust and faithful love of God, and how the Lord repaid her richly through the goodness of a stranger. Ruth reads like a suspense novel- with unexpected twists and turns, surprises that will thrill you and an ending that looks far beyond the time it is set.

Power for Christs Sake Commentary

Summary of 3 John Commentary

Jesus’ final words on earth were about power; He said those who believed in Him would receive power from the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). As Christians, that “power” means many things; the power to preach the truth of the gospel, the power to resist sin, the power to do the work God gives us, the power to love people as God does, and more. Those are godly kinds of power- but since the Fall, human beings have also struggled with a lust for another kind of power- for controlling our own destiny, and for exerting influence on people and on the world around us.

3 John is a Book about power- how some people use power for Christ’s gospel and how others use power for themselves. Join us as we see how the power of Christ works for unity in the church and how the improper use of power results in division and disharmony in the body of Christ- His church

2nd Timothy Commentary: Virtual Reality - 4 Virtues central to Leading Well and Dying Fulfilled

What is Leadership?

If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people together to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea. – Antoine de Saint‐Exupery

The pages of history are filled with the names of great leaders; whether benevolent or evil. Powerful nations have always risen and fallen on their charisma, wisdom and determination. But leading a nation – and the character and personality required – is vastly different from the qualities necessary to be a Christian leader. The former demands a certain eagerness and ambition for self. The latter requires the opposite; a genuine calling by God and true humility. What the world values in its leaders is almost always the opposite of the qualities Jesus exemplified and those he imparts to the Leaders He calls to Himself and for His Church.

In this commentary on 2 Timothy, we discover that leadership to which Paul calls his young protégé, Timothy, is based upon four virtues:

BE: What he is called to
BE KNOW: What he KNOWS and Who He KNOWS
LIVE: How He LIVES
REPRODUCE: Who he INVESTS in

A Guide to Spiritually Pausing: Pause Guide

In the summer of 2011 the Lord called our church to take a spiritual pause. As our pastors meditated on the Scriptures they discovered something remarkable: spiritual pauses, brakes in regular routines, often accompanied major outbreaks of God’s Spirit. This was true for Moses, David, Jesus and Paul to name but four. To assist individuals in our church family in their spiritual pause we created this guide to spiritually pausing. It’s not a commentary. It’s not a devotional. It’s a guide. This may sound contradictory, but Pausing is not “doing less,” but rather doing the best things first, making the main things primary during your day, your week, and your life.  This ‘guide’ to spiritually pausing has been created to help you develop healthy rhythms that see you putting God first every day.

1st Timothy commentary: The Guardians

Passing the Torch

1 Timothy is an intensely personal letter from the apostle Paul to his son in the faith, Timothy.  From his prison cell in Rome, Paul exhorts and encourages this young pastor to remain faithful to his calling and to effectively lead the house-churches in Ephesus as they endure heresy from within and attacks from outside their walls.  Timothy was inexperienced but it was his time to take up the work Paul left him, to guard the truth of the gospel and carry it faithfully to the next generation. 1 Timothy is a critical letter for leaders of every church. In this commentary we spend time unpacking controversial themes as women in leadership, elders and deacons not to mention financial aid. 1 Timothy is a must read for leaders in every church.

Colossians Commentary: Colossal Quakes

Colossians
Christ the Lord

From perhaps the highest theological point in the entire New Testament to the ordinary work-a-day order in an everyday household, Paul writes to a tiny, isolated church in the middle of Asia Minor. He talks of Jesus as Creator and Sustainer of all, and confronts heresies that would threaten to draw people away from His gospel.  Paul’s words come to a city devastated by natural disaster and lift her citizens to fresh awareness of the Lord and His holiness. This commentary takes the natural disaster that had beset the church and exegetes the text in a way that encourages us to strengthen ourselves when disaster strikes.

Nehemiah Commentary: 52 Days

A Historical Lychpin

The southern kingdom of Judah was carried into exile in Babylon in 586 BC,  after God’s prophets had been warning them of the danger of their covenant disobedience for hundreds of years.  After 70 years in exile, they were allowed to return. Yet after many decades they still had not rebuilt the city of Jerusalem or its walls;   She lay desolate and a disgrace to Yahweh. Nehemiah is the story about the man whom God called upon to rebuild His citadel; a man of deep prayer, strong leadership, godly character and immense courage at a time a critical time in Israel’s history.  It only took 52 days to rebuild the city walls that had lay in ruins for nearly two centuries.  Nehemiah’s successful work for God points to our own need to obey and press on despite overwhelming odds. In the corresponding series that accompanied this commentary, we challenged the congregation to examine what God wanted to do in them in 52 Days. This commentary splits the text thematically into 7 sections and challenges every reader to ask that same question: What does God want to do in you?
